Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida in late September 2022, leaving unprecedented flooding and destruction across the state. Many Ys have taken significant damage and are out of energy. The Ys that are in operation have become safe havens for isolated and homeless people, a place where families and individuals can find electricity, hot showers and a comforting environment.

In September 2022, Hurricane Fiona recently hit Puerto Rico, causing massive devastation while the island was still recovering from Hurricane Maria in 2017, a series of earthquakes in 2019 and 2020, and the ongoing pandemic. Ys in Ponce and San Juan are responding to vital community needs. Learn how you can support their ongoing efforts.

Flood, eastern Kentucky

In late July 2022, eastern Kentucky was affected by devastating flooding. At least 25 people died and many are still missing.

LosPikeville Area Family YMCAlocated in Pikeville, Kentuckyopened the doors to those who need a shower or a place to cool off.They are collecting donations of clean towels, personal hygiene products, washing powder and cleaning supplies. Your donation will help them continue to provide these critical services.

Tornado, Andover, Kansas

On April 29, 2022, theAndover YMCAwas hit directly by an EF-3 tornado. Although staff managed to keep members safe during the storm, the building was significantly damaged by the tornado, leading to the need to close and rebuild. Meanwhile, Y Neighbors throughout the Wichita area opened their doors to 135 employees and members of the Andover YMCA.

On December 28, 2021, high-velocity fires ripped through miles of Boulder County, Colorado, destroying more than 1,000 homes and businesses and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of homes. In these first moments, theNorthern Colorado YMCAopened its Lafayette YMCA branch as a Red Cross shelter, taking in more than 300 adults, children and seniors, and about 45 pets.

For more than a week, the Y housed evacuees from Louisville and Superior, collected truckloads of donated food and supplies, distributed heaters and water, and provided space and support to other organizations serving displaced families and individuals. The Y continues to offer free child care at the local Disaster Assistance Center and provides financial assistance for after-school and pre-school care for families who lost everything in the fire.

Tornados, Kentucky

On December 11 and 12, 2021, a tornado outbreak devastated communities across several states in the Midwest and South. Kentucky was especially hard hit, with dozens of lives lost.

The following Ys are supporting their communities as they recover and rebuild. Please consider helping in their efforts.

Mayfield YMCA Tombsin Mayfield serves one of the hardest hit communities by tornadoes. The Y distributes food and supplies to residents and provides use of showers along with free toiletries. They also participate in an initiative called "Proyecto Salvemos la Navidad" to collect essential items for children and teenagers.

Hopkins County YMCA Familyin Madisonville is working with community partners and response agencies to transport essential supplies and is offering the use of its showers to anyone who has been affected. They are also organizing an initiative called "Make Christmas Happen" to ensure that local children still receive gifts this holiday season.

Hopkinsville Christian County YMCAin Hopkinsville offers take-out, serves lunch and dinner, and mobile food delivery. The facility is also open for anyone to use the showers, computer and charging stations.

Earthquake, YMCA of Haiti

On August 14, 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the coast of the southern peninsula of Haiti. On 25 August, the death toll reached 2,189, with 12,200 wounded. In addition to the damaged schools, churches and clinics in the area, some 37,300 homes were destroyed, leaving thousands of families without adequate shelter and food.

YMCA d'Haiti operates centers in the affected region in the communities of Les Cayes and Camp-Perrin. The YMCA used its presence to provide basic food and medical supplies to families.With your support, YMCA d'Haiti can reach more people affected by the earthquake's devastation.

Amid school closures and economic uncertainty, a growing number of people are facing food insecurity. In response, hundreds of Ys across the country are offering free take-out meals to help address this serious issue.
